Susan Filley: For the Love of Good Pots

Susan Filley works with porcelain making pots that are defined by a touch of elegance and a lively sense of gestural grace.  Susan first started with clay as a functional potter, the sheer joy of using a handmade pot and the myriad of pots to make and explore, were all delightfully rewarding.  Over more than 30 years of making pots, and in her passion for the beauty and rich colors she has found in her work with porcelain, she has added new forms and ideas to what makes a pot. Her thoughts on function expanded to include the many intricate ways that beauty and home intersect in our daily lives.  Her work is now more sculptural and her approach includes more challenges, with altered forms and intricate glaze surfaces.  

Working in porcelain, Susan will demonstrate both throwing techniques and her dramatic altered forms. This hands-on workshop is designed to allow each individual a chance to work at improving their skills and make some new and unique forms. Susan will discuss the process of designing ‘good’ form and developing form ideas. The class will include instruction on throwing, methods of altering, and discussion on firing and glazing.  Susan will also give a hands-on demo of her decoration techniques using colored porcelain slip. Basic throwing skills are required.
