    Joe Bova

    After the Flood: Animal Ranch

    August 14-19, 2016 – 5 day workshop

    Register before July 14, 2016.

Join Joe in New Mexico for a 5-day hands-on workshop.  Enjoy total immersion in the beautiful landscape of Ghost Ranch while learning and making clay forms.

Joe will demonstrate and guide the creation of zoomorphic sculptures and functional works with extraordinary animal personality and expression. Capturing human expression with the animal will be practiced and applied. Using techniques of slabs, coils, and the wheel, participants will investigate the animal figure as pot and the pot as animal figure, including essential elements like handles and spouts. Adapting repoussé, a metal working technique, to shaping clay, Joe will demonstrate manipulating basic forms from the inside to articulate the specific animal character and its gesture. Firing will be discussed as an element of the ceramic palette, in addition to applied surfaces.

Joe Bova is a renowned ceramic artist who has taught at universities in Louisiana, Ohio, and held numerous teaching fellowships and residencies around the country and abroad. A Fulbright alumnus, a Member of the International Academy of Ceramics and a past president of NCECA, he is a leader in the national Ceramic Art community.  His commitment to excellence and education is only exceeded by the fun participants have in taking a workshop with Joe.

Bump Up the Scale - Expand Your Ideas

    August 22-27, 2016 – 5 day workshop

    Register by July 21, 2016.

Enjoy total immersion in the beautiful landscape of Ghost Ranch while learning from Sheryl and making clay forms.

"Using a sculpture clay body and building with slab strips, we will create works on a larger scale. Then by cutting away we will abstract the forms and introduce negative spaces to make sculptural vessels or forms. During set up time I will show some of my tricks for making smaller functional pieces. Then I will demo layering the surfaces with the use of a crackle terra sigilatta, oxides underglaze and glaze. Sketching ideas will be encouraged to help facilitate your ideas."

Sheryl Zacharia has 15 years experience teaching at Greenwich House Pottery as well as the West side Y in NYC and the Art School at Old Church in Demarest, NJ. She has taught a number of workshops that are enthusiastically received by attendees. In addition to many National group and Solo Exhibitions, she  treasures her opportunities to teach and share her love for clay medium and to also continue her own quest for learning.

    Celebration of Clay 2016
    Confrontations

    September 1 - 25, 2016

As a member of New Mexico Potters & Clay Artists, you are invited to participate in our annual exhibit.  This show is our opportunity to share exciting new ceramic works created by members.

The show will be held at the Sixty Six Gallery in Historic Nob Hill, 4009 Central Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM  87108.

    Entry deadline  August 1, 2016

This theme for this year’s shows is “Confrontations”. Jurying for Best of Show and for the three Merit Awards will be based on craft, creativity and correlation to the theme.

Confrontation may be interpreted in many ways: as social criticism, as comment on the human condition, or as the tension between opposites: near & far, solid & fluid, fire & ice.

“Conquer the angry one by not getting angry; conquer the wicked one by goodness; conquer the stingy one by generosity; and the liar by speaking truth.”

    Guatama Buddha

The theme is discussed further in The Slip Trail online newsletter at www.thesliptrail.com.

Entries will be displayed on our exhibition website, www.celebrationofclay.com where we will again feature our interactive People’s Choice Vote.

If you are not currently a member of NMPCA, join now before you register for this show.

    NMPCA 2016 Ghost Ranch Workshop

Ceramic Surfaces:  Keep on Top of It

    September 9-11, 2016 – 2 day workshop

This year we return to our popular New Mexico Connections format with short presentations by several presenters.  Six master potters will lead short programs, each on a different technique for treating the surface of your pottery or sculpture.  This popular workshop format brings together artists interested and expert in many different techniques and methods and results in a very lively exchange.  All participants learn from the presenters and from each other in the process of having great fun.

Our focus this year is on techniques to finish the surface of clay:  You’ve read the books, you’ve watched the you-tube demos, you’ve see the articles…now you can try the techniques out and see how they work for yourself.

    Presenters for this workshop include

Lauren Karle presenting Sewing Clay:  Darting Slip-transferred Slabs

Mary Sharp Davis with Slip Trailing and Other Quick Surface Textures

    Judy Nelson-MooreSculptural Surfaces

Barbara Campbell presenting Carving, How to Make It Pop

Abby Salsbury presenting Layering and Depth

Lee Akins presenting Dry, Textured Surfaces

Accommodations at Ghost Ranch this year are limited to "dormitory-style" rooms with shared bath and camping.  Alternative accommodation can be obtained at Abiquiu Inn at a discount when attending the NMPCA workshop.
