Artist's Statement:

Growing up in Oklahoma, next to the Cherokee and Osage people, I became fascinated with the symbolism and spirituality of Native American art. Anthropomorphism of the eagle, owl, coyote, bear, and snake is consistent through many early American cultures. I learned balance and intricacy by studying the details of nature. Much of my work reflects my love of natural forms and inspiration from the ancient cultures.

The freedom to make almost any shape one can imagine, in clay, inspired me to take up ceramics in the mid 1990’s. Practical and whimsical pieces and unusual forms decorated with symbols allow combinations of tactile and visual art. Mixing glazes and the magical transformation which takes place in the fire keep my interest piqued in this mysterious process.

When engaged in the creative process my mind, while engaged in the effort, slips into a meditative state and the work seems to take over much of its own development. Wood and earth suggest patterns which were not part of my original plan but bring out their own characteristics. As much as I enjoy creating this work, the real joy is when it gratifies others. If a piece delights someone and can continue to inspire them, then my vision is satisfied.
