Artist's Statement:

As a sculptor I balance the physical and emotional aspects of making figurative pieces. In sculpting the female form I study, understand and appreciate the feminine in all its complexity. The challenge I find is to better connect with and, in turn, to offer a personal interpretation or expression of the feminine through the image.

In most cases the figure develops intuitively out of imagination. At times memory serves me - a woman … a friend, relative, acquaintance … may reveal herself in the finished work. In other instances, the piece may reflect an internal process/experience. Each piece, however, takes on a specific tone and feel - revealing for me, the radiance of the feminine and all that it stands for. My appreciation for the feminine coupled with the sensual nature of working in clay, drive the creative process forward.

The building process I use is simple. Clay is rolled and coiled into shapes that take form as I work. Some are built of low fire earthenware while others are of high fire stoneware. Pieces are finished with glazes, sigillatas and/or a combination of underglazes and stains depending on the particular feel/intent of the image.

Each sculpture provides a glimpse into many things, including my aesthetic preferences, sensual nuances, particular memories and personal experiences.
