Statement

NMPCA artist Diane MacInnes, Santa FeDiane's relationship with clay is a meditative, intimate, and intuitive journey — one that has been evolving and transforming for over six decades.

Inspired by the tones and textures of the natural world, she works to express subtle human emotion in ways that transcend barriers, creating pieces that each viewer experiences differently. Her work is a challenging exploration of materials and techniques, embracing even joyful accidents. Through a variety of firing methods, she coaxes unpredictable, often intriguing color variation and accentuates the qualities of different clay bodies.

Each piece is a hand-built, wholly unique expression — a story rooted in human struggle, healing, or inner dialogue. A piece feels complete only when it begins to communicate something indefinable, perhaps shocking or surprising: a transformative current that Diane follows to its end.

Born in New York City, she has lived, traveled, and studied across the U.S. and abroad. She earned a BFA in Sculpture and Art Education from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where her culminating work was a seven-foot floating female figure designed for placement in a pond. She later earned an MS in Art Education with a photography emphasis from SUNY New Paltz, where she explored the natural landscape with a 4x5 view camera, producing large-format black-and-white prints. Her thesis exhibition centered on the mystery of water — moving, still, misty, frozen — always shifting, always alive.

Diane taught for 35 years, infusing her creativity into the lives of her students. She now works from her home studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she lives with her husband, a fine art photographer, fine art photographer-Warren Marr – www.warrenmarr.com We welcome clients by appointment.
