“Fish1”: Raku fired stoneware fish with modified cone 04 glazes, 7” wide

Statement

NMNMPCA artist John Weber, CorralesI have brought the raku process into my work using the “naked raku”technique using slips that craze and allowing bright colors to be very evident in the raku piece itself. Blending abstract expressionism and impressionism merging the tactile and visual aspects of clay and glazes. Living in the land of landscapes, has a a real influence on my work. As an artist, I have to believe work is always dynamic and in flux

Bio Artist statement:

My current ceramic work can be thought of as a hybrid of abstract expressionism and impressionism, where the tactile and visual qualities of clay and glazes, merge with the nature of these two artistic styles. The work transcends direct representation, focusing instead on forms, textures, and compositions. The works draw from impressionism ’s essence, capturing fleeting impressions and inviting viewers to find familiar shapes or feelings within the abstract forms. Much like seeingrecognizable images in the shifting shapes of clouds. I am very thankful for the artists that have come before and inspired me. The pieces each evoke landscapes, emotions, or even memories, but they remain undefined enough to let each viewer bring their own perspective to the work. This interplay between the concrete and the intangible is what makes these pieces so compelling to me because they invite a dialogue between the artist, the medium, and the audience. These works are windows into the mind like little thoughts that pop in and out of our consciousness and what they might represent. The use of perspective in the pieces keeps ones’ eye moving into the piece instead of out. I listen to where my eyes are looking and what they are seeing and how they are moving.
