Artist Statement

NMPCA artist Sara D'Allessandro, Cuba

Hand-built fired clay unique is my sculpture medium.   My sculpture is not designed; it evolves.  I seek energy and animation in my work and pursue “the heat of creation” over refinement.

My focus for the last three decades has been large work for the outdoors. Clay sculpture slakes the thirst in the public eye for volume and texture which is mostly absent in contemporary public sculpture.   The transit of the sun mobilizes light and shadow over the forms animating the work throughout the day.

Personable in scale these figures have a sense of being inhabited.  They do not reference race, religion, social class or culture.  With no explicit narrative and there is no attempt to tell the viewer what to think.  Arising up from the same ground with the viewer the individual as a part of a larger entity is emphasized.
